MY EXPERIENCE AS A YAV  AT MY WORKPLACE

 

The month of September marks my first month volunteering for the YAV program with the Peace and Hope Institution in the Sign Language program located in the province of Moyobamba, San Martin region, Peru, and this has been wonderful and very meaningful to me.

My volunteering with Paz and Esperanza is on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays:

On Mondays I prepare materials for classes with the deaf and hearing in the Paz and Esperanza office.

 

On Thursdays I accompany teacher Luz Clarita Tejada and Jessy Chávez to give sign language classes to hearing teachers of the Serafín Filomeno National Emblematic School located in the province of Moyobamba, these Thursday activities also help me to expand my vocabulary to be able to have a better interaction with the children, deaf adolescents and young people.

 

On Fridays and Saturdays I teach Spanish to deaf youth at the Charles Michel of Lepeé School for the Deaf in the district of Nueva Cajamarca, where young people develop various meaningful activities that allow them to learn more vocabulary in Spanish.

 

                                                             

Honestly, I feel very satisfied with this first month of volunteering working with children, adolescents and young people because it was significant and at the same time challenging because I took on the responsibility of teaching the Spanish language to young people, since they already master sign language and need to learn Spanish so that they will communicate in writing way. When teaching Spanish to young people I have to understand what they ask me or tell me in sign language, for me it was and still is a little difficult due to the fact that I still have a lot to learn about this language; but as the weeks went by I began to understand some words that I was taught when interacting and at the same time I put them into practice in different contexts where I was, I really appreciate a lot because it is because of them that I have a basic and necessary vocabulary that I can use when teaching Spanish classes. 

I am aware that I have the responsibility to learn sign language as soon as possible to be able to interact with the students, so I am committed to continue putting into practice every word or expression I learn in the place where I am volunteering.

MI EXPERIENCIA COMO VOLUNTARIA DEL PROGRAMA YAV EN MI SITIO DE TRABAJO 

El mes de setiembre marca mi primer mes haciendo mi voluntariado para el programa YAV con la Institución Paz y Esperanza en el programa de Lengua de Señas ubicado en la provincia de Moyobamba, región de San Martín, Perú, y esto ha sido maravilloso y muy significativo para mí.

Mi voluntariado con Paz y Esperanza son los días lunes, jueves, viernes y sábado:

Los días lunes preparo los materiales para las clases con los sordos y oyentes en la oficina de Paz y Esperanza.

 

Los días jueves acompaño a la profesora Luz Clarita Tejada y Jessy Chávez a brindar clases de lengua de señas a profesores oyentes del Colegio Nacional Emblemático Serafín Filomeno ubicado en la provincia de Moyobamba, estas actividades de los jueves me ayudan también a ampliar mi vocabulario para poder tener una mejor interacción con los niños, adolescentes y jóvenes sordos.

Los días viernes y sábados brindo clases de español a jóvenes sordos en la escuela para sordos Charles Michel de Lepeé, en el distrito de Nueva Cajamarca, aquí los jóvenes desarrollan diversas actividades significativas que les permite aprender más vocabulario en español.

 

                                    

Honestamente me siento muy satisfecha de este primer mes de voluntariado trabajando con niños, adolescentes y jóvenes ya que fue significativa y a la vez retadora porque asumí la responsabilidad de enseñar el idioma español a los jóvenes, pues ellos ya dominan la lengua de señas y requieren aprender castellano para que puedan comunicarse de manera escrita. Al brindar las clases de español a los jóvenes tengo que entender lo que ellos me preguntan o me dicen en lengua de señas, para mí era y sigue siendo un poco difícil por el hecho de que aún me falta mucho por aprender de esta lengua; pero con el pasar de las semanas fui comprendiendo algunas palabras que al interactuar me enseñaban y al mismo tiempo las ponía en práctica en diferentes contextos en donde me encontraba, realmente aprecio un montón porque es por ellos que tengo un vocabulario básico y necesario que puedo utilizar al brindar las clases de español. 

Soy consciente de que tengo la responsabilidad de aprender lo más pronto posible la lengua de señas para poder interactuar con los estudiantes, por ello me comprometo a seguir poniendo en practica cada palabra o expresión que aprenda en el lugar donde estoy realizando mi voluntariado.
